On 30th April, 2018, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that the Immigration Department had recruited 210 Immigration Assistants who did not possess the required qualifications.
The Bureau conducted investigations which established that the Department of Immigration had recruited 127 persons as Immigration Assistant although they did not have the necessary qualifications.
On 5th May, 2022, the Bureau arrested Ms. Cecilia Chazama former Minister of Homeland Security, Mr. Masauko Medi, former Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Services, Mr. Limbani Chawinga, Ms. Pudensiana Makalamba, Mr. Chandiwira Chidothe (Immigration officers of various positions) and Mr. Hilario Chimota, former Principal Secretary for the Department of Human Resource Management and Development.
They are likely to be charged with abuse of office contrary to Section 25 B (1) as read with Section 34 of the Corrupt Practices Act. They will be taken to Court after the Bureau has interviewed them.
