On 10th July 2023, Zomba Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court convicted Mrs. Agnes
Kaunjika Mthatiwa for abuse of office contrary to Section 25B (1) as read with Section 34
of the Corrupt Practices Act. The Bureau investigations established that in 2018,
Mrs. Mthatiwa while working at Zomba District Council, facilitated a UNICEF funded
training for Caregivers at the Liwonde Community Development Centre. It was also
established that Mrs. Mthatiwa engaged five (5) employees from Liwonde Community
Development Center to attend the training and receive subsistence allowances meant
for the participants who were absent.
Each of the five employees received subsistence allowances at the rate of MK25,000.00
per day which amounted to MK175,000.00 each for the seven days. Mrs. Mthatiwa
received from each of the employees MK155,000.00 out of the MK175,000.00 for
personal use. In total, she obtained from the employees, a total sum of MK775,000.00
for personal use.
On 19th July 2023, the Court ordered Mrs. Nthatiwa to pay back the MK775,000.00 or
serve 12 months in prison. She repaid the money and was released. However, her
conviction record still stands.
