COURT IN BALAKA FINDS ONE GUILTY OF CORRUPTION OVER MILLENIUM CHALLENGE ACCOUNT (MCA) FUNDS

On 17th October, 2019, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr.
Robert Mgundo, Chairperson of Village Grievances Resolution Management Committee
(VGRMC) at Senzani along the Phombeya -Nkhoma Overhead Lines Project in Ntcheu was
soliciting money from Projected Affected Persons. The project was implemented with funds
from the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) funds.

The Bureau investigations established that Mr. Robert Mgundo, had solicited and received
money amounting K1, 700,000.00 from (Electrification) Project Affected Persons.
He was arrested on 17th May 2018. He was taken to Balaka Magistrates Court. He was
charged with two counts of corrupt practices and two counts of abuse of office contrary to
Section 24(1) and 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.

He was convicted on 2nd October on all the counts. On 11th October, 2019, the Court
sentenced Robert Mgunda to two years imprisonment with hard labour. He is serving the
sentence at Ntcheu prison.
