ACB ARRESTS THREE WARD COUNCILLORS IN KARONGA

On 20th February 2020, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) received a complaint alleging that ward councilors in Karonga District Council were illegally and unprocedurally selling public land. The ACB conducted investigations which established that the Councilors in or around October 2019, received K2,400,000.00 worth of money from Karonga market vendors with a view to allocate them spaces of land without the Council’s knowledge.
On 13th September, 2022, the ACB arrested Ngasalayumo Mwangonde, Councilor for Kaporo ward, Smart Kayira Councilor for Rukuru ward and Steven Simsokwe, Councilor for Chilanga ward. They are likely to be charged with abuse of office contrary to Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act and fraud other than false pretense contrary to Section 319 A of the Penal Code. They will be taken to Court after the Bureau has interviewed them.
