THE HIGH COURT REJECTS YUNHUA LIN’S APPLICATIONS FOR BAIL AND UNLAWFUL DETENTION AS A CORRUPTION SUSPECT

The Lilongwe High Court has denied applications for bail and unlawful detention by Mr. Yunhua Lin, a wildlife crime convict and corruption suspect.  In his ruling, Hon. Justice Redson Kapindu stated that Mr. Lin is still a flight risk and that releasing him could compromise the integrity of the current legal proceedings due to the seriousness of the corruption offenses he faces. As a result, the Court mandated that Mr. Lin remain detained at Dedza Prison until additional hearings.
Speaking following the decision, Mr. Peter Sambani, the ACB Lead Prosecutor, praised the Court’s ruling, stating that it strengthens the Bureau’s position on the issue.  “The ACB welcomes the Court’s ruling. The Court has agreed with our submission that the suspect poses a flight risk and could abscond if granted bail.” said Mr. Sambani. “The Bureau is ready to proceed with the corruption trial in January 2026.”
Allegations that Mr. Lin tried to bribe a High Court judge and prison officials in an effort to get his release are the basis for the corruption case against him. After a contentious presidential pardon in July 2025, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested him again.
The case has been adjourned to 12 -13 January 2026 for the commencement of fresh corruption hearings.
