2024 – ACB NEWSLETTER

Message From The Director General

I am happy to present to you the 2024 Newsletter for the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). I am eager for you to read this publication so that you can familiarise yourself with what the Bureau has done in the year 2024.

When I joined the Bureau, I had a priority goal for the Bureau and that is accessibility of the Bureau across the nation. With this I managed to have the very first satellite office opened in Mchinji which is a very progressive development for the people of Mchinji. Equally we plan on opening another one in Karonga and Mangochi so that this is just a start of making the Bureau easily accessible to everyone.

We encourage public officers to prevent corruption rather than face repercussions for partaking in corrupt activities. This newsletter will showcase many prevention activities with some law enforcement for those who failed to resist and reject corruption. However, it is worth noting that the Bureau has made significant strides in bringing to book perpetrators of corruption by investigating and prosecuting them in the year 2024. Many other cases are in court and are being finalised which is a win for the people of Malawi.

I just want to take a moment to make it a point to you dear reader that corruption is a volatile enemy. Corruption fights back while being fought. It is a vice that morphs with each system, changing colours like the chameleon. As much as some cases can seem easy to investigate and prosecute, some cases are very delicate and require caution in investigating as well as prosecution.

Bearing this in mind I would like to encourage everyone to hold hands with the Bureau rather than discourage and spite the efforts. We encourage all of you to be vigilant in resisting, rejecting and reporting the vice that is corruption.

This fight is not an easy fight, and it requires stealth and strength to overcome challenges. But perhaps the best motivation is knowing that you dear reader and other stakeholders are there to stand with us even though the battlefield may get ugly.

I want to tell you that I work with the best officers who, despite challenges, forge on and are very relentless in their pursuit of dealing with corruption. They risk their lives and those of their loved ones daily to serve the country and I could not ask for a better team than them. Thank you to my fellow colleagues for the endless support in this daunting task.

The Partnerships, Collaborations and all the other support that comes from the public and private sectors within this fight is greatly appreciated. It is my hope that Malawi will be rid of corruption soon.

Let me also convey my sincere thanks to His Excellency, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera President of the Republic of Malawi and Dr Michael Ussi the Vice President for their support and trust in me to head the office while we wait for a successful candidate for the post of the director general. The increased budgetary allocation by Government and the monthly funding have helped the ACB to discharge its mandate.

In 2024 we commemorated International Anti-Corruption Day (IAD) and our officers were also actively involved in the monitoring of the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) across the country. This assisted in stopping the vice in its tracks in several markets contributing to preventing rampant corruption during the AIP season. The Bureau is committed to ceaselessly and without hesitation execute their required tasks to keep the fight going. I hope the updates in this newsletter give you a glimpse of the efforts the ACB is making and inspire you to join the fight.

Finally, I wish the ACB and the entire readership of this Newsletter all the best as we continue with the fight against corruption.

A Corruption-Free Malawi is Possible. It begins with You and Me! ENJOY
