The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has, on 30 July 2025, arrested Mr. Shadric Namalomba, former Commissioner for Customs and Excise at the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), for offences relating to abuse of office and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The arrest follows a complaint received by the Bureau on 27 March 2025, alleging that in or around 2015, Mr. Namalomba used his official position to facilitate the release and exportation of banned hardwood (Mukula) logs in contravention of the Ministry of Trade’s 2008 ban on the export of such timber products.
Following a thorough investigation, the Bureau established that Mr. Namalomba:
•Facilitated the unlawful transfer and warehousing of banned Mukula logs to Elvis Freight and Cargo Services Limited, a facility linked to private businessperson Mr. Noel Masangwi;
•Abused his official position for the benefit of Mr. Masangwi, contrary to established MRA customs procedures.
•Conspired with Mr. Masangwi to commit a felony by bypassing customs protocols and enabling the illegal exportation of prohibited timber products.
Mr. Namalomba is likely to face the following charges:
•Misuse of public office contrary to Section 25B (1) as read with Section 34 of the Corrupt Practices Act;
•Conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to Section 404 of the Penal Code.
The offences relate to actions committed between January and March 2015 in both Blantyre and Lilongwe. Mr. Namalomba is expected to be brought before court to be formally charged.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau remains resolute in its mission to combat corruption.
