ACB ARRESTS FORMER ACTING DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS FOR M’MBELWA DCISTRICT COUNCIL AND ACCOUNTANT FOR NORTHWORKS LIMITED FOR FALSIFYING INFORMATION

On 22 April 2025, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested George Gopani, and Gabriel Mkandawire for providing false information to the District Commissioner to deceive M’mbelwa District Council procurement committee.
The ACB investigations established that in August 2022, George Gopani, Acting Director of Public Works for M’mbelwa District Council, provided false information to the District Commissioner, for the work progress of the grading of roads in Mzimba North Constituency under Hon. Yeremia Chihana, to authorize payment of K15,000,000.00 to Northworks Limited. This is contrary to Section 122 (a) of the Penal Code.
Investigations also established that in May 2022 Gabriel Mkandawire, an accountant for Northworks Limited, forged an official document purporting to be a quotation from E and V Engineering for grading of KIA-Luhomero-Kasasile road; Enukweni-Kavula-Malokotera road and Bwengu-Katope road in Mzimba North Constituency under Honourable Yeremia Chihana. This is contrary to Section 358 of the Penal Code.
They were taken to Court where they were charged. They applied for bail which the Court granted after satisfying the following conditions:
•To report to ACB offices in Mzuzu once a very fortnight on Fridays
•Paid a cash bond of K200,000.00 each
•Provided one surety each bonded at MK500,000.00 not cash
•Surrendered travel documents to the Bureau

They will appear in Court on a date to be set by the Court.
