The Anti-Corruption Bureau, on 15th November 2024, arrested six people in connection with various offences which they committed during the 2022 recruitment of health workers at Phalombe District Council. The six include George Ramundi, Kesteni Wiillie Chokani, Mayamiko Custom, Dorothy Mussa, Florence Antonio and Sarah Phiri.
The arrest follows an investigation conducted by the Bureau which established that George Ramundi solicited K200,000 to influence the employment of Euster Namalia as hospital attendant at Phalombe District Council. Kesten Willie Chokani was arrested for aiding George Ramundi to solicit the advantage. The investigations further established that Mayamiko Custom, Dorothy Mussa, Florence Antonio and Sarah Phiri uttered false documents, namely Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) and Malawi School Certificate Examination (MSCE) certificates, during interviews for the posts of Disease and Control Surveillance Assistants and Hospital Attendants.
All the accused persons were taken to Phalombe First Grade Magistrate Court where they were formally charged. They took plea and pleaded not guilty. Thereafter, they applied for bail and were granted by the Court.
Trial will commence on 3rd December 2024.
